Causeway and Bushmills

Our first morning waking up in Northern Ireland began with a full Irish breakfast consisting of eggs, sausages, toast, potato, Irish soda bread, tomatoes, bacon, bangers, juice and coffee. We declined the cereal.  I now better understand my Irish family's heart condition.

our car and drove to the Giants Causeway.  It didn't disappoint.  Rain had been predicted for the day but we were blessed that our visit was cool but dry. The bizarre rock formations that make up the Causeway were created by prehistoric volcanic activity.  The activity happened well before the Atlantic Ocean was formed.  We truly enjoyed our time there.

Upon leaving the Causeway we drove a short distance to the
small village of Bushmills to tour the Bushmills Irish Whiskey Distillery.  The 45 minute tour was surprisingly interesting.  This distillery is the ONLY Bushmills distillery, bottling 8 million bottles every year!  Equally surprising was the "sampling" room following the tour.  Now, I hate to beat a dead horse here but again it's about driving.  Following the tour we had three "samples", the size of each were larger than a shot!  Who in the world thinks THAT is a good idea?  Place that on top of opposite side roads, opposite side steering wheel, roads about the size of the alley that we had when I lived on North Oakland and now it was raining!

However, we made it back to our Bed and Breakfast safely and are happy to be tucked in for the night.

  1. I am reliving our last trip to Ireland through your posts. We visited Bushnills distillery with a bus load of tourists, some of who were tea-toddlers. I stuck close to them when we hit the sample room. Thank goodness we were on a bus. We hit the Giant's Causeway after staggering onto the bus. I hope you get a chance to visit Jameson's and the
Guinness Brewery when you hit Dublin.

  2. Great pictures. I did see you in the giant causeway pic, glad you didn't climb any farther. Sunny here today, but windy and cold with a smattering of snow overnight. Enjoy the weekend.

  5. Sounds like a good start of your trip. The Giant’s Causeway is quite a marvel of nature, isn’t it? Say HEY to Finn McCool from the Kolbs. Thanks for keeping us up to date on your adventures. It’s enjoyable to hear about your travels.

  6. I remember the same feeling about getting in a rental car without any instruction, how narrow the roads were and how glad we were that we brought a GPS with us. We never got that far north so we are enjoying the ability to live vicariously through your blog. Have a wonderful and safe journey. Love, Barbara aka Grandma H

  8. I had no idea there was only 1 Bushmills Distillery! I'll remember that next time I buy a pint. And I'll think of the 2 of you! Sounds like a great trip so far. But, why kind of cereal did you turn down at breakfast? Hopefully you can try it some other morning. Continue the fun!
